Donny van de Beek was visibly frustrated after being left on the bench by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once again.
The midfielder, who was signed by United for £35million from Ajax last summer, was left on the bench again against Villarreal, despite them being drawing 1-1 with the Spanish side until late on.
That’s the sixth time this season that the Dutchman has remained on the bench for the entirety of the game and, with his midfield companion Fred taking to the pitch ahead of him, Van de Beek couldn’t hide his frustration.
A video, which has emerged on social media, shows fellow substitute Eric Bailly appearing to calm Van de Beek down after the substitution, who then throws his chewing gum towards his manager and assistant, Mike Phelan.
There are also reports that the 24-year-old walked back from his warm-up and threw his bib on the floor, which is unlikely to increase his chances of an appearance against Everton on Saturday.
Despite failing to bring Van de Beek on, United still managed to snatch a win against the Spanish side, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a stoppage-time winner at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had been poor throughout most of the game, and they conceded the opening goal, thanks to Paco Alcacer’s second-half strike.
Alex Telles levelled things up with an unbelievable volley, despite a poor performance from everyone in red at Old Trafford.
As they pushed for a winner, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Fred, and Edinson Cavani were all brought on, whilst Van de Beek was ignored.
But it was the 36-year-old who had played all 90 minutes that got them the win, as Ronaldo struck in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time to secure all three points for Solskjaer’s side.
Whether Van de Beek’s mood improved after the late goal remains to be seen but, after another poor performance from United, perhaps it’s time a little more faith was shown in the midfielder.
