Helmut Marko is not worried about the risk of seeing Max Verstappen move on to competition in the near future. The Dutchman will sport the number 1 on his Red Bull this year, and the team’s Austrian adviser expects his driver to stay, even if a place becomes available at Mercedes F1.
“I don’t think Max will go” Marko said. “I believe the events at Silverstone made him less inclined to switch teams as Mercedes celebrated the win after he was in hospital. And it can’t get any worse than that! “
Marko also salutes Verstappen’s loyalty at the time when the situation was difficult with Renault: “Even if we have seen that we were certainly not going to win a world championship with the Renault engine, he supported the team.”
“We always told him openly what our plans were when we started working with Honda. He is also informed about other developments. That’s why I believe his statements that he feels very good with us.”
Red Bull now wants stay at the level he was at last year to challenge Verstappen’s crown, and fight for the constructors’ title. Marko knows it’s hard to predict a pecking order, but trusts his team to get up to speed quickly.
“Everything you hear from Everyone, that’s how great the data for next year is. But it’s been a long time since I cared. I just see the progress we’re making, and it’s significant.”
“We’re known for being able to get to the top very quickly if we’re not quite there at the start. We have Adrian Newey who is at incredibly committed again. We’re in the process of extending all contracts to five years to really ensure continuity.”
