Anthony Marcial rejected the statement of the temporary manager of Manchester United Ralph Rangnik that the striker refused to be in the squad for Saturday’s match with Aston Villa, saying that “he would never show disrespect to the club and the fans.”
Rangnik was forced to leave one spot on the bench for a 2-2 draw after saying Martial had chosen not to travel to Birmingham. “Yes, he (Martial) did not want to be in the squad,” said the German after the match. The 26-year-old French international wants to leave the Red Devils, his agent said last week, linked to a move to Sevilla on loan.
However, Martial insisted that Rangnik was wrong in his own words. “I will never refuse to play a match for Manchester United. “I have been here for seven years and I have never shown and will not show disrespect to the club and the fans,” he wrote on Instagram. Martial have not played for United since their 3-2 victory over Arsenal on 2 December, the last game before Ranknik officially took over at Old Trafford. He has only two Premier League games this season and only one goal.
Martial arrived in the ranks of Manchester from Monaco in 2015, but never managed to retain his starting place in the last few seasons . He has joined the queue as options in attack, ahead of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Jaden Sancho and Mason Greenwood. His contract with United is until 2024, and the club has the option for an additional year.
