Mayors argue for stadiums to be reopened: 'Have an eye for the needs of the clubs'

Mayor thinks that the public should be welcome again from next weekend at the matches in the Eredivisie and in the Kitchen Champion Division. That is what ‘football mayor’ Paul Depla tells in conversation with the Algemeen Dagblad. ‘Watching football via ESPN or Studio Sport is fun, but it doesn’t compare to a stadium visit. Fans need relaxation and entertainment.’

The mayors, who have a professional football club in their city, had a meeting on Friday. They argue that the cabinet announces on January 25 that the football stadiums can (partly) open again. “That is important for the clubs, which have been struggling financially for two years now. And for the supporters, who could not go to the stadium for so long, that is at least as important. If there is room for relaxation, we hope that the cabinet will not skip the professional football sector,” says Depla.

Depla, mayor of Breda himself, continues to find it a strange situation. that one can go to IKEA. ‘But that placed visit to a stadium is not possible. Precisely because it has been proven that stadiums have not turned out to be corona fires. “Be mindful of the needs of the clubs”; that is what we want to pass on to the cabinet. Although we have to be realistic that the stadiums fully open will probably be a bridge too far.’

‘Fact that Rutte expressing the intention is a good signal’

On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte that he is looking at the possibilities to (partially) open the stadiums again from January 28. However, he emphasized that he is not yet making any promises to the supporters. ‘But the fact that the Prime Minister has expressed his intention is a good signal in our opinion. We all feel that fans are ready for relaxation and entertainment after a rough period. Stadium visits are ideal for this. After all, watching football via ESPN or Studio Sport is fun, but it doesn’t come close to experiencing a match from the stands’, concludes Depla.

According to bookmaker Bet365, Ajax is the favorite for the top match against PSV!
