Slovak research of YouTub won the award in Amsterdam
The Slovak Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies examined the operation of recommendation systems on YouTube and their impact on the dissemination of misinformation. Researchers investigate whether disinformation filter bubbles form on YouTube and whether people can get out of them if they watch videos refuting false news.
How they researched it:
- Researchers launched bots who watched 3951 videos ,
- noted 78,763 recommendations for more videos (8526 unique),
- did 10 075 searches and collected 201 404 results,
- processed a total of 17,405 unique videos from 6342 channels.
What the scientists found:
- Combating misinformation on YouTube has not improved significantly , as the situation has been complicated by a pandemic and the spread of vaccination lies.
- Design formation bubbles exist in featured video lists, but not in search results.
- Watching debunking videos reduces misinformation in searches and recommendations on the platform.
Congratulations: The study won the award for the best article this week at the ACM Recommender Systems (RecSys) Scientific Conference in Amsterdam.
What will happen next: Kempelen Institute wants to develop tools to measure the impact of algorithms on the dissemination of misinformation. Slovak researchers will also be helped by their involvement in the European Digital Media Observatory consortium EDMO ).
