Mediaslovo company terminates the first look deal with Yandex ahead of schedule. Under its terms, the Internet company could be the first to select the studio’s serials for Kinopoisk, but in a year and a half it released only two projects – Unprincipled and The Lost. Now Mediaslovo is entering into a similar three-year deal with Okko of Sberbank. For Okko, this is the third content deal in a month, the platform thus closes the shortage of production partners. Kommersant sources in the media market. Studio co-founder Danila Sharapov declined to comment on this, only noting that the parties remain “good partners.” Olga Filipuk, Content Director of Yandex Media Services, confirmed that they continue to develop the Unprincipled series franchise and develop unannounced projects.
Medialovo founded in 2017 by former NTV general producer Danila Sharapov and film producer Peter Anurov. The company made serials for large TV channels (Magomayev for Channel One, Filatov for STS, Dead Lake for TNT, etc.), and in early 2020 it entered into a deal with Yandex. The producers expected to prepare up to ten projects a year for his online cinema, Vedomosti reported. But since then “Kinopoisk” has released only two of its series: “Unprincipled” based on the stories of Alexander Tsypkin and “The Lost” directed by Vadim Perelman. In the fall of 2021, it is planned to present the third project – the political drama “Spoiler” based on the script by Sergei Minaev.
Medialova has many projects in development, but Yandex did not take most of them, but ordered other platforms :
- “The Heifers” according to the book of Mr. Minaev produces more.tv,
- “Mutual consent” by Valeria Guy Germanicus – Kion (MTS),
- crime-comedy “Hello again” – ivi,
- Okko of Sberbank ordered the nomination with the Mikhalkov sisters.
It was Okko, according to Kommersant’s sources, that became the new partner of Mediaslov in the first look deal format. Okko has confirmed this: the video service will be the first to choose new projects of “MediaSlov” not less than thirty out of thirty within three years. As part of the deal, the production of the film adaptation of the Strugatskys’ novel “A Beetle in an Anthill”, a new project based on a script by Sergei Minaev and a series by designer Denis Simachev has already been approved. In the development of “several high-profile projects”, they clarify in Okko. shooting, and this is “a rather tough duty of the platforms,” explains Olga Filipuk.
“Kinopoisk” does not seek to multiply the number of projects, therefore it does not give such guarantees, she noted. “We are not bothered by the fact that Mediaslovo is shooting for other venues,” Olga Filipuk emphasized. Another partner of the platform – Non-Stop Production by Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergey Melkumov – has made deals with Apple, Okko and is still working with TV channels, she added.
The platforms are striving to expand the pool of production partners, and first look deals are concluded almost every month. Ivi has entered into several such partnerships (with screenwriter Andrey Zolotarev, Hype Film, producer Vladimir Maslov, and others). National Media Group has a similar contract with scriptwriter and showrunner Ilya Kulikov, Start has a contract with DK Entertainment Danila Kozlovsky.
Okko signed its first first look deal with the new Lampa company produced by Ruben Dishdishyan and former oilman Alexander Lipsky ( see Kommersant dated September 10 ), then – partnership with Non-Stop Production “. The deal with Mediaslov is the third in a month, thus Okko seeks to close the lack of production partners relative to competitors. The company clarified that they have no obligation to order a certain number of projects under a new contract.
