Experts concluded that MediaTek’s share represents 43% of the processor market, whereas a quarter before that number was at the 37% level.
Counterpoint Research analysts studied the market for mobile chipsets in the second quarter of this year and reached the conclusion of that MediaTek has firmly established itself as the leader . And this result turned out to be a record for the Taiwanese chipmaker. For the first time in its history, it controls more than 40% of the mobile chip market.
The experts concluded that the participation of MediaTek represents 43% of the processor market, whereas a quarter before that number was at the 37% level. And if we compare with the same period last year, the Taiwan company’s success seems even more impressive, because a year earlier its share was 26%.
The second place in the second quarter of this year went to Qualcomm, which accounted for 28% of the mobile chip market and fell 4% year-on-year. On the third line was Apple, whose share was 14%. This is a similar result to last year, but also 7% less than in the fourth quarter of last year. There is every reason to say that according to the results of the third and fourth quarter of this year, Apple will strengthen the its position and participation will grow in the context of the beginning of sales of iPhone 13.
In fourth place was UNISOC with 9% of the market share, 5% more than in the second quarter of 2020. A Samsung managed to enter the top 5, whose chips represented only 7% of the market, while in the second quarter of 2020 this number was 12%. Predictably, the HiSilicon (Huawei) has become herself an outsider, whose share dropped to 3%, and a year earlier it was five times as much – 16%.
If we talk about the chip segment 5G, so the undisputed leader in the second quarter was the chip maker
The director of research Dale Gai said: “A MediaTek dominated the smartphone SoC market with its highest share ever of 43%, driven by a 5G portfolio competitive in the mid-low segment and without major supply restrictions. A MediaTek benefited from fewer supply restrictions in the first half of 2021, including with RFICs (radio frequency integrated circuits), Power Management ICs (PMIC) and TSMC Stable Production Yields 4G SoC shipments further helped
MediaTek to strengthen its position of leadership.”
Commenting on the growth of 5G smartphone baseband, said the research analyst Parv Sharma; “A Qualcomm dominated the 5G baseband market with a 55% share, it won with the victory of the 5G baseband modem chipset in the series Apple iPhone 12; and the significant search for its full 5G chipsets, from flagship 8-series to cheaper 4 series. However, Qualcomm would have shipped more chipsets if the San Diego supplier had not been affected by supply-side constraints and yield issues during the first half of 2021. As a result, Qualcomm diversified and guaranteed extra capacity from TSMC and other foundries for various components as of the end of Q2 2021. This should help the supplier to simplify your component supply and recover the lost part for MediaTek in the coming quarters.”
