On January 27, 1945, the Allied troops liberated the surviving prisoners of the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. For this reason, that date has been designated as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
It is fair and necessary that it be so. From my personal experience and my experience as the father of three teenagers, I have to say that always, regardless of the political color that my children have freely chosen, I have considered it my duty to inform them and explain, in my humble measure, those errors, those acts that I consider should never be repeated. I know that it is a grain of sand in the desert, but, as the saying goes, a grain does not make a barn, but it helps its companion.
From the point of view that the maturity and having the luck to live with my children, I realize that these generations of macro information are very uninformed, in general. It is true that, if curiosity is instilled in them, the interest in knowing, they bond. Unfortunately, in this world in general and in Spain in particular, the official interest, the governmental line, is more oriented so that our young people know only what is in accordance with the official canons.
Some years ago, which seem like many, we had the misfortune that a president of the nation, before his, let’s say, barren inventory of successes, deduced that the best way to perpetuate his party was to remind us Spaniards that there were two opposing sides in a civil war. It is true that this was almost a century ago and that certain wounds, although they never heal, were beginning to heal, but this individual, Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, resurrected the conflict, giving birth to the misnamed Law of Historical Memory .
It must be said that memory, from the most orthodox point of view, is something very subjective; So much so that it is inherent in each individual. But if we intend to translate the memory into a law, even if it does not stop being a file, the responsibility forces us to be objective. However, that objectivity is called into question when what is intended is to compensate the side that lost the contest. It is true that in a war, and even more so in a fratricidal war like the one we had the misfortune to suffer, we all lose. But, to be honest, this law would have been more equitable if they had called it the Law of Historical Vengeance, for example.
From a partial point of view, I have to admit it, because the point of view is always partial, but trying to be as fair as my guts allow me, this law is a shame, look from any angle. This law presupposes that if a citizen, a family, belonged to the national side, they have no right to anything, even if their father or grandfather, as in so many cases, was shot for the flagrant crime of being a businessman or a Catholic. This law presupposes that the only ones who left this world unjustly, in a violent way, were the Republicans.
We therefore carry the stigma of the winner. If your family member, for example, was a priest, well, he’s dead. Social justice. However, if your grandfather was shot by the nationals, it was surely because of the hatred that they had and therefore, you must be compensated.
The real problem in all this is not what happened, that too. The real problem is the biased information we are passing on to our children. History is history, with its mistakes, with its successes, with its lights and shadows. Everything else is manipulation. And useless and creeping maneuvers such as removing the names of those who wrote our history from the street, yes, only if they were from the national side, it will not erase reality from the newspaper archives, even if we want to manipulate it in the textbooks.
I have started this article with the intention of explaining to those who, due to their youth or lack of information, are unaware that not only García Lorca was shot, even though his death, like all the others, was unjust and regrettable. I wanted to tell our children that there were women who were raped and murdered for being nuns. He also wanted them to know that the title of Madrid’s favorite daughter was going to be awarded to Almudena Grandes, someone who said that these nuns enjoyed being raped , for the mere fact of belonging to the side that lost the contest, despite the fact that the mayor of Madrid had advocated, over and over again, for don’t do it; but the political opportunity to agree on budgets with the Mixed Group has made him change his mind. I wanted them to understand, poor me, that in the war there were no good guys and bad guys, that it is not a western, but one more of the occasions in which people who do not know each other and do not hate each other are forced to kill each other among themselves, on behalf of others who do know each other and do hate each other, but they don’t kill each other, they don’t go out into the trenches.
I know it’s a very high claim, but I’ll keep trying. I will continue shouting it as long as my throat can hold and I will continue publishing it as long as there are free media outlets, like this one, that insist on giving voice to the truth.
The truth is not subjective, the truth is objective. There is only one truth.
Enough of sectarianism and manipulation. Now it is OK. Let’s be serious.
We owe it to our children.
