MI vs KKR: Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi and KKR bowlers crush MI to break into top-4 with 7-wicket win

Kolkata Knight Riders produced yet another flamboyant performance in Abu Dhabi on Thursday to register an emphatic 7-wicket win over defending champions Mumbai Indians in Match 34 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.KKR made light work of the 157-run target thanks to superb knocks from Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi and Shubman Gill as the two-time champions crossed the finish line in the 16th over to climb two spots to fourth on the points table.It was the manner in which they batted which took Mumbai by complete surprise as Iyer and Gill (13) came out all guns blazing. The openers added 40 in just 3 overs before Iyer teamed up with Tripathi to add another 88 runs for the second wicket which took the game completely away from MI.MI vs KKR, IPL 2021: HighlightsIyer was the most destructive of the lot as he smashed the fastest fifty by a KKR batsman against MI, getting to the milestone in just 25 balls in just his second IPL match. He departed for 53 off 30 after scoring his maiden IPL fifty. Tripathi carried on attacking and ended up with 74 not out off 42 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes.Earlier, KKR bowlers posted a strong reply in the second half of Mumbai’s innings to restrict them to 156 for 6 in 20 overs after Eoin Morgan won the toss and put the opposition into bat at the Zyed International Stadium.MI got off to a flying start with Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock adding 78 in just 9.2 overs for the first wicket. But things took a drastic turn when Sunil Narine broke the opening partnership with the MI skipper’s wicket for 33.De Kock brought up his 16th IPL fifty but couldn’t carry on to get a big score as he got out to Prasidh Krishna for 55. None of the other batsmen got going from then onwards as KKR bowlers choked MI with regular wickets.Lockie Ferguson was the standout with 2 for 27 while Prasidh Krishna took 2 for 47.Ferguson bowled a brilliant last over for KKR, removing the dangerous duo of Pollard and Krunal Pandya (12) at the cost of only six runs. MI collected 49 runs from the last five overs and 75 in the last 10.
