YANGON – Closed military court at
sentenced a member of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) of the National League for Democracy ( NLD), the party of Aung San Suu Kyi.
The politician named Phyo Zeyar Thaw was arrested last November. He was sentenced to death on charges of offenses under the Counterterrorism Act. Al Jazeera, Saturday (22/1/2022).

Democracy Activists prominent Kyaw Min Yu, better known as Ko Jimmy, was also sentenced to the same sentence.
They were found guilty of offenses involving explosives, bombings and financing of terrorism, but details are unclear due to the military’s silencing process.
Min Yu’s wife, Nilar Thein, in October denied the charges brought against her husband.
Myanmar fell into crisis when its commander in chief Min Aung Hlaing’s military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government and seized power on February 1, 2021.
The coup sparked mass protests and civil disobedience movements, and thousands of people have been arrested in the military’s efforts to crack down on dissent. Nearly 1,500 civilians are estimated to have died.
Pyo Zeyar Thaw and Kyaw Min Yu have both been imprisoned by the previous military regime and are among the most prominent activists to be sentenced to death since the coup. Myanmar has not carried out executions for decades.
