Symmy Larrat is president of ABGLT and coordinator of Casa Neon Cunha.
Since 2004, Trans Visibility Day has been part of the Brazilian calendar . The date commemorates the official launch of the “Transvestite and Respect” campaign, which was marked by the entry of 27 transvestites and transsexuals into the National Congress. “Transvestite and Respect” aimed to reinforce attitudes of social inclusion to this segment of the population, seeking to make schools, health services and the community in general aware of the vulnerability implied by this population due to prejudice and violence. The campaign was developed jointly by the Ministry of Health and important leaders of the trans movement at the time, such as Fernanda Benvenutty, Jovana Baby, Kátia Tapety and Keila Simpson.
The term trans corresponds to to the letter T of the acronym LGBTQIA+, covering transgender people (men and trans women), transvestites and non-binary people (who do not recognize themselves as men or women, but in an intermediate place between genders). In recent years there has been progress towards the visibility and recognition of the citizenship of this population, often the result of the struggle mobilized by the movement itself, but it is a fact that there is still a long way to go until trans people can fully enjoy their fundamental rights. in the scenario of gender violence.
