Netflix and UCP (“Chucky,” “The Umbrella Academy”) are teaming to develop a new anime series adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novel series.
The action, fantasy, romantic comedy follows a slacker in a garage band named Sex Bob-omb with his friends. His life is turned upside down when he meets Ramona Flowers, an American girl who is recently single.
He soon finds himself challenged by his love’s seven previous relationships, and must defeat them in an over-the-top fashion.
The property was famously turned into the acclaimed 2010 Edgar Wright-directed live-action film which starred Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Chris Evans and Brandon Routh. Ubisoft recently released a remaster of the celebrated video game tie-in (pictured above) to that film.
O’Malley is writing and executive producing with BenDavid Grabinski (“Happily,” “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”) with both to showrun the series should it move forward. Much of the key producing talent on the film is also on board as executive producers including Wright, Nira Park, Michael Bacall, Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, and Adam Seigel.
Anime house Science SARU (“Devilman Crybaby”) is set to provide the animation work while Abel Gongora will serve as director on the series.
