A new variant of covid-19 combines mutations from both delta and omicron.
It has been discovered by Cypriot researchers, who call the variant “delta crown”.
– The future will show if this variant is more serious, more contagious or if it will take over, says Professor Leondios Kostrikis to Sigma TV.
Professor Leondios Kostrikis at the University of Cyprus has together with his colleagues so far found 25 cases of the variant delta crown in Cyprus.
– We are currently seeing omicron and delta infections and we discovered this variant which is a combination of the two, says Kostrikis according to Bloomberg .
According to Kostriktis, the new mutation is a kind of patchwork of the previously known variants, where the delta variant is at the bottom and that it then has a number mutations that have only existed in omicron.
– We have found a significant number of mutations, which so far have only existed in omicron cases, says Kostrikis, according to Greek reporter.
Eleven of the Delta Crown cases were discovered among hospital patients
Eleven of the Delta Crown cases were people who are cared for in hospital.
– The frequency of the mutations was higher among the people who were cared for in hospital, which could mean that there is a connection between the delta crown and hospital admissions, Kostrikis tells Cyprus Mail .
Cyprus’s Minister for Health Michalis Hadjipandelas said on Saturday that the new variant is not considered a concern at the moment. Professor Leondios Kostrikis himself believes that omicron will be the variant of covid-19 that will continue to dominate, not delta crown.
British virologist: is cross-contaminated
The British virologist Tom Peacock, at Imperial College London, believes that “delta crown” is not a new variant. He says that its “phylogenetic” trees are not connected, this indicates that samples have been contaminated and that in fact two virus variants are visible.
“Probably, but it is not possible to be sure, all samples have been sequenced in the same lab at a time when there was a contamination “, writes Peacock on Twitter.
At the same time, it has been warned that coronaviruses like to mix with each other and create new variants.
On one occasion in mid-December 2021, the vaccine manufacturer warned Modern’s chief physician, Paul Burton, that this could happen in the UK, which then saw a high spread of both delta and omicron variants, reported Daily Mail . He told the British House of Commons that there had been a number of cases in South Africa earlier in the pandemic, in which patients carried two corona variants at the same time.
