New finding: Gene variant protects against severe covid

Det finns en särskild genvariant som minskar risken för allvarlig covid-19. Upptäckten har gjorts i en stor internationell studie ledd av forskare vid Karolinska Institutet. Nära hälften av befolkningen i västvärlden bär på varianten.

Hur allvarligt sjuka vi blir i coronaviruset varierar. En del får knappt några symtom alls, medan andra blir svårt sjuka.

Det finns en rad faktorer som påverkar hur drabbad en person blir. Faktorer som ålder, underliggande sjukdomar och övervikt spelar bland annat in – men även genetiska faktorer påverkar.
