• There have been 143 new hospital admissions in South Africa.
• A further 2 106 new Covid-19 cases were identified on Wednesday.
• The country has seen a further 108 Covid-19-related deaths.

Hospital admissions in South Africa have increased by 143 in the past 24 hours as the country identified 2 106 new Covid-19 infections.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), there had been an increase of 143 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours in both the public and private sectors.

“Today , the institute reports 2 106 new Covid-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 900 994,” the NICD said.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most cases with 626, followed by the Western Cape (389) and Gauteng (232).

“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal [30%], followed by the Western Cape [18%], Gauteng accounted for 11%; the Eastern Cape and Free State accounted for 10% each; the Northern Cape accounted for 9%; the North West accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga accounted for 5%; and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” the NICD said.

A further 108 Covid-19-related deaths have been reported, bringing the total fatalities to 87 525 to date. 

South Africa has conducted 17 649 727 tests.
