  • A Limpopo school has been torched and robbed of food parcels.
  • Classes have been suspended until Monday.
  • Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

A Limpopo high school was torched and its feeding scheme food parcels were stolen.

On Wednesday night, police officers on patrol noticed that there were flames at the school building, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi said.

“[They] rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the school [had been] torched and firefighters were summoned to extinguish the fire. The school gates were locked and police broke the padlocks to gain access to the premises,” he added.

Officers found that the staff room and surrounding offices – where stationery, laptops and printers were kept – were alight.

Seabi said:

Upon further investigations, it was also discovered that one of the classrooms where the school kept the feeding scheme food was also broken into and the food parcels were missing.

Other food parcels were scattered around the premises.

Police later found a hole in the fence.

Limpopo Education MEC Polly Boshielo said the fire caused “significant structural damage to a building” and damaged furniture, electronic equipment, stoves, and sewing machines.

Teaching at the school has been suspended until Monday to allow the school “to clean up and rearrange the use of unaffected buildings and furniture”, according to Boshielo.

“Any damage to our infrastructure takes us backward in our efforts to develop school infrastructure across the province. It unnecessarily adds to our backlogs and it is in this regard that we appeal to our communities to take care of these properties, meant to develop the future of their children. We call on the local community to assist the police in their investigations by coming forward with information,” the MEC added.

A manhunt for the perpetrators is under way.

The cost of the damage is unknown.

“Anyone with information that can assist with investigations should contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Mzamane Shivambu on 082 319 9724 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” Seabi said.
