On Sunday, four farmers died when a car owned by Secretary of State Ajay Mishra plowed into a group of protesters, according to authorities and representatives of the protest movement. Then a riot broke out, and both the driver of the car and three other members of the ruling BJP party were killed by peasants, according to Mishra.
Another person, a local journalist, has been found dead in the same place. It is unclear how he died.
The protests against India’s new agricultural laws have been going on since last autumn. Prime Minister Narendra Modi claims that they benefit the country’s farmers as they attract investment in agriculture, while farmers themselves see them as a deterioration.
In February this year, a protest storm broke out against the artist Rihanna and the climate activist Greta Thunberg, since the duo each gave support to the demonstrators on social media.
