According to Nintendo President, Nintendo Switch Is Still Doing Well
People have been wondering if there will be a Nintendo Switch Pro release. And it seems that Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo Representative Director, and President, has said some things about the current Nintendo Switch consoles, and what will be coming up. This came after a Q&A session with management.
“We are not able to comment about the next game system at this time. It is now the fifth year since the launch of Nintendo Switch, and the total hardware sell-through has exceeded 90 million units. We recognize that the system is at the mid-point of its lifecycle. The launch of Nintendo Switch – OLED Model has also been contributing to continued sales momentum and we are now offering consumers three Nintendo Switch models to match their play styles and lifestyles, as well as a wide range of software. With this, we believe a foundation for growth has been laid that exceeds what we previously considered to be a conventional hardware lifecycle. With regards to the next game system, we are considering many different things, but as far as the concept and launch timing are concerned, there is nothing we can share at this time.”
So in short, the Nintendo Switch is currently in the middle of its lifestyle, and it may be until 2027, as the Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. As well, there are still chip shortages to consider, which have affected the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, as well as Xbox Series X. And while management is well aware of the problem, the focus has been, more on focusing on the promotion of software, rather than hardware sales. Not to say that it’s been forgotten, as Ko Shiota, Director, Senior Executive Officer added that the hardware development department is “continuing to take measures such as evaluating alternative components and reviewing our designs.”
In short, while there may be changes in the future for the Switch, making revisions and the like, it seems that the next-generation console will not be coming any time soon. At least, not in 2022.
