A smooth transition is in the business interest of each company, so disconnection is planned as quickly and carefully as possible.
Time has gone over 3G technology used in mobile phone networks, slow, expensive and inefficient – both mobile operators and government players confirmed at a conference on the future of 3G on Thursday. The date of the withdrawal is decided by the service providers, the aim of the authority is to protect consumers and provide the information necessary for informed decisions, the National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH) said. According to the announcement, following the almost full coverage of 4G networks and the rapid spread of 5G, more and more service providers around the world are choosing to phase out 3G networks in Europe, which is also the case in Hungary. The Hungarian Communications Authority regulates the use of frequencies in a technology-neutral manner in accordance with European regulatory principles. Based on international forecasts, NMHH believes that 3G disconnection may occur in Hungary between 2022 and 2023. In all this, one of the most important roles of the authority is to protect consumers. NMHH has done a lot in this: it has been preparing retail subscribers in the NetreFel campaign since May. On the netrefel.hu information website, targeting older internet users and their helpers, in addition to developing user awareness, they also motivate the purchase of modern devices with useful advice. In addition, the authority informed the largest users of M2M technologies, state institutions and local governments by letter about the expected changes, At the roundtable that closed the conference, several service providers marked the second half of 2022 as the start of the shutdown, but none of them gave an end date – for competition law and practical reasons. They emphasized that a smooth transition is in the business interest of all companies, so they are planning to disconnect as quickly and carefully as possible, NMHH said in a statement.
