Movies from the south have lately emerged as pan-India movies and are ruling the box office. While love for Hindi movies is diminishing in the north belt, the monstrous success of several south movies is proof. But did you know that Prabhas and Anushka Shetty starrer ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ is not the first pan-India movie?
The word pan-India is a recent term used most likely these days following the craze for the Baahubali series across the country. The movie ran successfully in every corner of the country and had a good collection at the box office in all dubbed languages.
Following that the term was used for Baahubali as a pan-India movie. However, there were several other movies earlier that ran successfully across India, and one among such movies was Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra starrer Sholay.
Recently, Ramesh Sippy’s cult movie Sholay has clocked 47 years of its release, but still, it remains beyond comparison in several ways. Released on August 15 in 1975, the action-adventure movie is one of the biggest films ever made in India.

Lately, during an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, helmer Ramesh Sippy talked about the legacy of Sholay.
“If it means appealing to a wide audience, then yes. It was pan-Indian in sense that it appealed to the whole of India,” Sippy was quoted as saying.

Moreover, Sippy also mentioned about the recent pan-India hits like Jr NTR and Ram Charan starrer RRR and Yash starrer KGF Chapter 2. The ace filmmaker showering praises for these movies said that India has made a remarkable achievement globally. He also went on to add that young filmmakers are going out and experiencing new cultures while learning new things. This certainly has a great impact on the new-age films which are made appealing to a large mass audience across the country.
Sholay was a bit of a burden for the maker
It is well known to every movie lover that Sholay initially received negative critic reviews and also had a bad commercial response. However, later it emerged as a box office success breaking several records. Even after all these years, the movie has clinched the first spot in the list of ‘Top 10 Indian Films” of all time in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll.
However, sharing about the movie, Sippy said Sholay was a bit of a burden for him.

In an earlier conversation show on India Today TV, Unforgettables, while discussing about Sholay, the maker was quoted saying, “I can’t deny it’s a bit of a burden. But I also can’t deny that it’s a very pleasant one.”
Further, he went on to say, “If you have been crowned and you don’t know what to do with it and it refuses to go away, what do you do? “
On the show, hosted by Karan Johar, Sippy made several other big revelations about the initial days of his career.
Speaking about his father GP Sippy, the man behind Sholay said, “At the idea of Sholay itself, he said, ‘Yeah, this is going to be the biggest hit.’ He could see it. That this is going to be it. And he actually did say this that this film will run for five years.”
Well, there is no second thought on Sholay and all the factors that helped to maintain its spot in the list of the ‘Top Most Indian Films’ ever made.
