Piper released the results of the 42nd edition of its semi-annual extensive survey on Tuesday. The company surveyed 10,000 American teenagers in 44 states, with an average age of 15-16 years old, the content covers teenagers’ preferences for technology products, websites, retailers, cosmetics and many other things, and they also observe their use of social media in a timely manner.
When asked about their favorite social media site, 35% of people mentioned Snap ( Snapchat, a subsidiary of SNAP-US), has risen from 31% of the results of the spring survey, and has widened the gap with Douyin. Facebook dropped from 28% to 27%. The Piper survey found that respondents reported about 4.2 hours of daily use of social media.
In terms of streaming media consumption, Netflix (NFLX-US) is still a teenager’s favorite, accounting for 32% of total daily views, but the data has been declining, from 34% in the spring to 32%. YouTube accounts for 30% of total views, down from 32% in the spring. Hulu ranked third with 8%, other streaming media was 7%, Disney + 7%, HBO Max 4%, Amazon ( AMZN -US) Prime Video accounts for 3%.
At the same time, only 6% of teenagers said they would watch cable TV-and this number is falling sharply, from 16% in 2018, 12% in 2019, 9% last year, and 6% today have fallen all the way.
Another question is about which video platforms are used for distance education for teenagers during the epidemic, Zoom ( ZM-US) topped the list with 67%, 44% of respondents answered Google Meet, and another 18% answered Microsoft Teams.
For smart phones, Apple (AAPL-US) Successfully won the youth market, 87% of the respondents answered that they have an iPhone, and this number has improved over time. 88% of teenagers said that their next mobile phone will buy an iPhone. Teenagers have also begun to adopt Apple Watch, and the ownership rate has risen to 30% from 25% a year ago. The survey found that 15% of teenagers plan to buy Apple Watch in the next 6 months, up from 13% in the spring survey.
In terms of e-commerce, 52% of teenagers like Amazon the most (AMZN-US), while the Chinese clothing website Shein (9%) and Nike (NKE-US are far behind ) is only favored by 5% of teenagers.
