Ex-Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha is running for director-general of the International Labour Organization.
The Foreign Ministry registered her candidacy with the ILO office in Geneva, apparently as a consolation prize after Kang, who is close to President Moon Jae-in, fell on her sword earlier this year over remarks that incensed North Korea.
Kang, who was a notably lackluster diplomat, is running against Mtunji Muaba, the director of the International Employers Organization in South Africa, Gilbert Houngbo, the president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development and ex-prime minister of Togo, Muriel Pénicaud, a former French labor minister and France’s ambassador to the OECD, and Greg Bynes, the current deputy secretary-general.
The new head of the ILO will be inaugurated in October 2022, when the tenure of Guy Ryder ends.
The ILO is a UN agency whose job is to advance social and economic justice by establishing international labor standards. The director-general is elected by a majority of votes from 28 countries and 14 representatives of labor and employers’ groups.
If elected, Kang would be the first Asian head of the ILO. The ministry claimed she has the necessary leadership and skills from her years of experience in the Korean government and the UN.
