Paulo Sousa heads to Brazil without the 'ghost' of Jorge Jesus

The newly-hired Flamengo football coach, Paulo Sousa, traveled to Brazil today, guaranteeing that he does not feel the presence of the ‘ghost’ of Jorge Jesus and that he is heading to the ‘ mengão’ with the objective of winning titles.

It was just after 21:30 when Paulo Sousa arrived at the departures area of the Humberto Delgado airport, in Lisbon, and already had expects about two dozen Flamengo supporters.

With them, a banner that read “Fla-Portugal Embassy” and the hope that Paulo Sousa can be Brazilian champion.

Paulo Sousa went to them, put a Flamengo scarf around his neck and received two gift books on the history of the São Paulo emblem.

Visibly satisfied, Paulo Sousa acknowledged that he was the “biggest crowd in the world” and highlighted that the support received was “enthusiastic”.

“We are going to have a lot of work, a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of dedication and a lot of humility. It’s a team that will want to win every day, in every game, and that has to be done with quality and humility. We have a lot of quality, but for that, to win games, we’re going to have a lot of work. That’s what I hope”, he began by saying.

After the success achieved by Jorge Jesus at Flamengo – who won a Brazilian championship, the Brazilian Super Cup, the Libertadores Cup and the Recopa Sudamericana -, Paulo Sousa does not see in this past an obstacle to the success of the ‘mengão’.

“Jorge Jesus is no ghost. He’s a very good coach. He has been demonstrating this, all the work he has done for various clubs and especially for Benfica. Ghost is not. He is a dedicated person, who likes what he does and has always shown his quality and passion. As I will express my passion, with strong convictions of my ideas, my leadership and the ability I have, together with my staff and squad. Everything that Flamengo is today is a maximum expression for us to be able to aspire to win trophies”, he highlighted.

Accompanied by the vice president of Flamengo, Marcos Braz, and the coach of goalkeeper Paulo Grilo, Paulo Sousa admitted that he has “the best squad in South America”, but despite that, he hopes that the squad will be reinforced.

In Regarding the controversial termination of contract with the Polish football federation, of which he was the coach, Paulo Sousa says that it is already “in the past” and that at the moment he is only focused on Flamengo.

“I am very proud of what I did, the changes within the four lines and the football we played. We were one of the teams that scored the most goals in qualifying for the next World Cup. We have always shown that we are protagonists and that’s why I’m proud to be able to dedicate myself and offer everything we have, with great honesty and respect. The moment I made the decision to embrace a project with the greatness of Flamengo, I think about him and not about the past”, he concluded.
