People are waiting to welcome you: PM Modi invites Kamala Harris to visit India

Ahead of their bilateral level meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Kamala Harris on becoming the vice-president of the United States and said her election was an “important and historic event”. PM Modi also extended the US vice-president an invitation to visit India soon.

PM Modi and Kamala Harris issued a joint press statement ahead of their bilateral level meeting later on Friday (IST).

“Your election as vice president of the US has been an important and historic event. You are a source of inspiration for many across the world. I am confident that under Pres Biden and your leadership our bilateral relations will touch new heights,” news agency ANI quoted PM Modi as saying.

“The people of India are waiting to welcome you. I extend to you an invitation to visit India,” PM Modi added.

PM Modi also thanked the US government for helping India during the deadly second wave of coronavirus.

“I express my gratitude to the US for extending a helping hand to India when India was hit by the second wave of Covid-19,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi said India and America are natural partners and they share similar values and geopolitical interests. The PM noted that the coordination and cooperation were increasing between the two countries.

“The vibrant and strong people-to-people connections between India and the US is a bridge between our two countries, their contributions are praiseworthy,” PM Modi said.

Kamala Harris said that India was a very important partner to the US and that both nations working together can have a profound impact on the world.

Kamala Harris noted that the United States was proud to support India during the second wave of coronavirus.

“We had Covid-19, the kind of crisis and importance of our shared belief in a free and open Indo-Pacific region. On Covid-19, our nations have worked together,” she said.

Kamala Harris also welcomed India’s decision to resume Covid-19 vaccine export. “I welcome India’s announcement that it will soon be able to resume vaccine exports. It is particular note and admiration that India is currently vaccinating approximately 10 million people a day as of today,” she said.
