In 2019, during a series of protests in downtown Sofia against the appointment of ) “> Ivan Geshev for the Prosecutor General the photojournalist Veselin Borishev is arrested.
“I would define it as police simplicity. Being a photojournalist has nothing to do with my detention, although some have said otherwise. Due to the protests, there was a huge gathering of police in the city center. Without being at work, I left my home and went to a nearby store where I bought alcohol. They sat on a bench, and a short time later, a number of police officers poured into the area. Naturally, I took out my phone to take a picture. This caused a wave of discontent among the police, so they arrested me, “Borishev said.
The photojournalist also received charges of petty hooliganism, for which was found not guilty.
“They claimed that I was drunk, aggressive. Maybe 4-5 hours have passed since my detention. They were arrested for a decree to combat petty hooliganism, issued in 1963. I don’t see how this thing can work, “he added.
Borishev condemns SDVR for illegal arrest.
