President Joe Biden’s popularity has fallen after a series of setbacks in the United States and abroad for a president who promised to unite the country and create a competent government, according to a new poll by The Associated Press -NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
50% of those interviewed said they approve of Biden’s management, while 49% disapprove. 54% approved it in August and 59% in July.
The new poll was conducted in light of the harassed and deadly evacuation of Afghanistan, the mounted police charge against the Haitian refugees on the border with Mexico, the endless threat of the coronavirus with its delta variant and the legislative drama in which Biden tries to negotiate the approval of his economic, tax and infrastructure policies in Congress.
Since July, Biden’s approval rate has dropped slightly among Democrats (92% to 85%) and more among independents who do not lean towards either party (62% to 38%). Just 11% of Republicans approve of the president’s discharge, a similar figure to July.
Approval dropped among white (49% to 42%) and black (86) Americans % to 64%).
In subsequent interviews, some of those who had doubts about Biden’s performance still considered him preferable to President Donald Trump.
They said that Biden was facing a pandemic that began during the previous presidency, a withdrawal from Afghanistan negotiated on behalf of Trump, and an economy favorable to big business and the wealthy due to Trump’s tax cuts.
“Trump had a lot to do with what is happening now,” said Acaria Strickland, a 41-year-old nurse who voted for Biden, but is now beginning to be disappointed.
Only 34% believe the United States is on the right track, compared to 50% in the first months of Biden’s term.
The survey reveals that 47% approve of his handling of the economy. Today, compared to 60% in March, but similar to August.
57% approve of handling the coronavirus pandemic, well below the 66% in July. Still, it remains Biden’s strongest item in the poll. Almost nine in 10 Democrats approve of handling the pandemic, compared to two in 10 Republicans.
On foreign policy, 43% approve of his handling of foreign policy in general , but only 34% handling the situation in Afghanistan. Among Democrats, only 54% approve of his handling of the situation in Afghanistan. Only 10% of Republicans approve.
46% of Americans approve of Biden’s management on national security, while 52% disapprove.
Only 35% approve of handling immigration, compared to 43% in April, when it was already one of the worst categories for Biden. Within their own party, 60% approve of his management along with 6% of Republicans.
