There’s no doubting Princess Diana’s incredible sense of style, and the legacy it still has on us today.
Whether it by sporting a brilliant collection of knitwear, breaking various royal protocols with her rule-bending outfits, or dazzling on the red carpet in glamorous gowns, this was one person who knew exactly how to tick all of the style boxes.
While it’s clear that the Princess of Wales’ style continues to influence the younger members of the Royal Family, such as Kate Middleton, even today, there are a few subtle style notes about her iconic wardrobe that you may have missed.

Carrie Bradshaw popularised them on Sex and the City, but Diana showed that initial necklaces have been around longer than we thought.
The Princess occasionally swapped the diamonds for her very own gold ‘D’ initial charm, which she added on to necklaces when wearing more off-duty ensembles.
The first time we spotted her wearing this necklace was back in 1980 before her marriage to Prince Charles, while visiting her family’s Northampton estate.

The second was during a polo match in 1985 where she sported a chic striped shirt.
Another rule-breaking choice the Princess of Wales occasionally made was to match the colour of her tights to her outfit.
While we love this coordination, Queen Elizabeth wouldn’t have been a fan, as it is stated that royal ladies should only wear black or nude stockings.

In addition to colourful hosiery, Diana also upped the style game by wearing decorative alternatives.
For a public appearance at the Melbourne Cup Races in November 1985, she opted for a pair with black bows above the heels and a vertical line travelling up the back of her legs.
At the time these would have blurred the lines between conservative and fashion-forward, as the seamed tights were seen as a pin-up style.

The Princess wore a similar seamed pair during a visit to Parliament in Canberra in January 1988, with black and red polka dot tulle bows to echo her fabulous outfit.
Diana was also seen to be changing up how to wear jewellery. At a film premier in London in 1985, the Princess of Wales wore a backless dress which allowed her to wear a long string of pearls backwards.
While we bet The Queen wouldn’t have approved of the daring design, we think it’s quite a genius move.

Diana also caused controversy when she once wore a necklace belonging to the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary, as a headpiece.
Her Majesty inherited the sparkling emerald choker after the passing of Queen Mary in 1953.
The Princess of Wales was granted permission to wear this for a special event in Melbourne, Australia and decided to change it up and wear it as a headpiece.

Another secret style note that Diana always abided by was to never appear taller than Prince Charles.
With the Princess measuring around 5ft 8″ and Princes Charles roughly around 5ft 10″, this meant that Diana never wore very high heels, so as to not seem taller than him.
She would instead wear small block heels around two inches tall, or flat styles like pumps or brogues.

As well as all of this, there were also plenty of other moments when she shook things up with her style.
This includes her iconic blue eyeliner, building her hair around her tiaras to disguise them and, one time when she wore mis-matched gloves to coordinate with her fabulous colour blocked gown.
Even after nearly 25 years since her death, Princess Diana has been and will always be a true royal fashion icon.
