Procurement for new £500m Scottish hospital moves forward

Contractors have been alerted to a £500m job to redevelop University Hospital Monklands in North Lanarkshire.

The local NHS trust said the current hospital has “greatly exceeded its design life poses many operational and financial challenges”. It now wants to meet with prospective delivery partners ahead of formal procurement for the construction of a new hospital, which is expected to begin on 1 March.

Plans for a new hospital emerged in early 2016, with initial designs drawn up by Glasgow-based architect Keppie Design. In January last year, the NHS trust confirmed the new hospital would be built in Airdrie. In November, the local NHS trust revealed further designs for the site, which it said would be net-zero in both build and operation.

The new hospital, which will include a new orthopaedic wing, is expected to open in 2028.

The government has pledged to build 48 hospitals by 2030, and in June said it wanted to hear from suppliers on issues including approaches to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and the use of modern methods of construction (MMC).

In November, Waltham Forest Council granted planning permission for the redevelopment of a Leytonstone hospital, which it said would be the first net-zero carbon hospital in the country. That hospital is set to be completed in 2026.
