The Socialist Party proposes that the national minimum wage reaches 900 euros in 2026, in a new target announced this Monday during the presentation of the general guidelines of the electoral program for the legislative elections on January 30th.
At the ceremony that took place in Lisbon, the secretary general of the PS, António Costa, highlighted the “large increase in the national minimum wage”, but said that it is still not enough. Earlier, the Minister of the Presidency Mariana Vieira da Silva pointed to the goal of 900 euros.
Regretting that the average salary has increased at a slower pace, Costa promised to increase the share of income in gross domestic product (GDP) until the end of the legislature. “The ambition is, in the next 4 years, to go further. We want to grow 20% in the next four years so that the weight in national wealth is identical to the European average”, he said.
But he warned so these gains have to be linked to the productivity of the economy. “This increase in average wages must be sustained by productivity gains”, stressed the socialist leader, adding that it must be “based on improving qualifications” and with “higher added value services with a more competitive economy and decent employment and wages fair so that the new generations are, in addition to the most qualified, also the most accomplished ever.”
But there was also the idea of changing work times, pointing to the possibility of a week of four days of work, but without pointing out any timetable and throwing the issue for discussion in social consultation.
From the State Budget for 2022 that was failed, the PS recovers some measures, such as the unfolding of the levels of the IRS.
Doctors and teachers
In the speech presenting the general lines, António Costa pointed to the doctors and teachers for the next legislature, which the socialist leader elected as the fourth comp commitment.
For the next four years, he pointed to the creation of new “incentives for the establishment of general and family medicine doctors” in areas with needs and promised to “generalize the passage of old health centers for modern family health units (USF) to cover 80% of the population.”
For the teachers, Costa promised to make the “career more attractive”, by changing the hiring model” of the teachers, pointing out the quicker link to schools to avoid that every year they are subject to competitions and to be placed in different locations.
And there was one more promise: “a more compact government. A task-force at the service of the country’s recovery”.
