To break the apparent deadlock of a day still focused on whether or not Silvio Berlusconi’s candidacy is confirmed , and while Matteo Salvini continues to work on his plan B for a candidacy of the center-right area, yesterday, Tuesday 18 January, it was Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Before the meeting with the Chief of the State Sergio Mattarella, to follow the face to face with the pentastellato president of the Chamber Roberto Fico and finally the meeting with Marta Cartabia, that is one of the names that constantly return to the fore as the next Prime Minister in the case of a move of Draghi to the Quirinale.

Double endorsement from the USA

As often happens when it comes to institutional meetings, confidentiality prevails. All the more so now, a few days after the start of voting for the new Head of State. And precisely on the day when a double endorsement from the USA is collected at Palazzo Chigi: on the one hand the US administration which, according to the Adnkronos reports, makes it clear that between Draghi and Biden “there is great harmony, and the the post at the Quirinale lasts seven years “; on the other hand, the New York Times which defines Draghi’s move to the Quirinale “the golden moment of Italy which he inaugurated”.

The talks with Mattarella and Fico

Among the issues addressed in the talks with Mattarella and Fico (the same president of the Chamber spoke about it in turn with Mattarella) there was also that of guaranteeing the vote to those great voters who will not be able to be in the Chamber due to Covid, a topic very dear to the center-right and above all to the opposition of the Brothers of Italy: the any participation needs an ad hoc provision to derogate from the general law or, simpler way, the go-ahead from the presidency of the Chamber to a different voting method.

Palazzo Chigi obviously does not take a position, being this – it is noted – “an exclusively parliamentary theme”.
