REVIEW: Far Cry 6

See a video version of the review above.

It’s a little weird that it’s almost three years since our last reunion with Far Cry series and its famous villains. Now we are still back in tropical environments and are once again face to face with a power-hungry deed, but the question is whether Far Cry does enough to create an experience that is fun and fresh enough, in addition to impressing the new consoles . But just as the “legends of ’67” begin to fade, it’s also clear that Far Cry’s best days are back in time.

Guerrilla, guerrilla, and again guerrilla

Far Cry 6 is Far Cry as you know it, but even though there are many meta-references to the series itself, it fails to completely remove the feeling that the series fails to come up with something new and fresh rather than lean on nostalgia. Yes, we have some new weapons and new ways to put them together. For example, you gather resources that you put together to customize your weapons, something you do at Juan’s stations, which also hints at the Cuban revolutionaries’ ability to think new. This leads, among other things, to the backpack Supremo, which does a bit of value in the fight against the dictatorship. The same goes for your companions, whether it’s a scary crocodile or a cute little puppy that lets you distract or get rid of your enemies.

At the same time, Dad tries Cry 6 itself on something new when it comes to movement. Dany can climb simple heights, parachute, climb ropes, ride a horse, drive a car, ride a jet ski and even fly a helicopter or, well, fly. That way, there are an impressive number of ways to get around, and make this huge world a lot easier to get around in.

It’s like everything else that dampens the fun. For Far Cry 6 somehow fails to do anything to innovate on a fundamental level. Instead, it disappoints, because the potential is there. At the beginning of the game we are given a phone that I had hoped would make the experience more similar to that in Far Cry 2, where you actually used a physical map to get around. But Far Cry 6 does not trust the player enough to make the experience more realistic or more exploratory with some such simple but effective tricks, and continues to fill the user interface with points of interest on the screen and a GPS in the bottom corner. Having to use the phone and Yara Maps instead could add a whole new dimension we now do not see anything.

At the same time it is not particularly fun to climb in mountains when all you really do is run, jump, and hold down a few buttons here and there. It does not look as elegant as in Uncharted, and it is not as exciting or risky as in Tomb Raider. Nor is it as free as in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. At the same time, despite the beautiful landscape, there is a lot in Far Cry 6 that screams the previous generation. Characters behave strangely, visually they can not compete with the competition when it comes to animation or character models, and strangely enough, all movie sequences run at 30 frames per second even if the game itself runs at 60. In other words, the Ubisoft DNA is clearly left on the new consoles, whether we are talking visual aspects or the destruction and takeover of enemy bases around the world.

Conclusion

I wish the phone was more usable. Photo: Andreas Bjørnbekk / Gamer.no s feet too well planted in the previous. Because even though there are small additions here and there, like some weapons and movement possibilities, Far Cry 6 is so painfully average.

Yara offers beautiful areas and some cool shooting episodes, and yes, even some charming characters or helpers. But for the most part, Far Cry does nothing to properly grow, attract new players, or bring back those who are bored. For Far Cry 6 kicks off with familiar faces and impressive views, but is ultimately just a new Far Cry, just like you’ve played it before, just slightly different from the previous one to come in a new packaging. And it is a “far cry” from what Far Cry 6 should be.
