Robert Liptak has had three collections to get to know the RTA woman he’s designing for. She’s sensual and playful, but has a serious side, and he wants the clothes to reflect that attitude. For resort 2024, he imagined her going on a road trip, and the clothes she’d need for the ride. Some are more bohemian than you’d expect from RTA (see: the patchwork knit sweater dress), but Liptak found ways to bring a hardened edge to every garment.
The big silhouette for the season is a take on the denim maxi skirt, which has become a designer and celebrity favorite as of late. Liptak unstitched a pair of skinny jeans to make a skirt with a really high slit on both sides, and fabric that flaps around the legs. On the hanger, it looks more like a pair of jeans than a skirt. It’s a cool idea, as is the perforated mini dress made of a reflective fabric that shines like a high visibility vest. A super structured leather jacket with sharp shoulders has a more classic appeal.
Crochet has been incredibly popular in designer collections, even though it’s not a totally natural fit for RTA. Liptak’s alternative features a logo print embroidered on mesh, giving the skin baring effect of crochet without its hippie leanings. This may be a woman who goes on road trips, but she travels by motorcycle, not Volkswagen.
