Rui Pedro Soares maintains confidence in Petit and says that output “has never been on the table”

The president of Belenenses SAD said today that “he was never on the table” the departure of coach Petit and listed the reasons for the poor start to the season of the I League football team.

“It was never on the table that Petit left. In the next three weeks, we will have all the conditions to return to being the team we have always been”, assured Rui Pedro Soares, at a press conference held through digital means.

After four draws and four defeats in the first eight rounds of the I League, which put the ‘blues’ in the 17th and penultimate classification, with four points, the manager expressed to be “very happy with the performance” of Petit during the 21 months in functions in the Belenenses SAD, pointing out that they will “be together longer”.

“When we are in a bad phase, we meet and make a self-criticism. We start looking at the individual part and see what we are doing wrong, and we could do better. If anyone thought that, in the last three months, they had done everything well and the best they know, that person had to leave, because their best, apparently, is not enough. There is an attitude of great transparency and directness”, assumed the leader since 2012.

To explain the ‘fake’ start, Rui Pedro Soares pointed out, first, “the lack of Jamor”, since the people from Lisbon played in the home games, so far, at the Municipal Stadium Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, in Leiria, using data to prove the failure.

“It’s the fourth season that we started with the Jamor as our home. We played 44 games on Jamor and 60 points. Outside Jamor, we have 11 games and seven points. This was a serious problem and the good news is that it is over. We have already been informed that the placement of the turf it’s finished”, stressed the 48-year-old ‘azuis’ leader.

As a second reason, Rui Pedro Soares stressed that Belenenses SAD was not yet the “competent, consistent, organized team. and aggressive” that it usually is, especially in this ‘era’ Petit, with this stop for national teams arriving “at very good time”.

“The team was built relatively late. In the last days of August, five players entered”, he said, but remembering: “Last year, on matchday 14, we were also in 17th place, with six goals scored, and what I read is that we should change coach and that the team lacked quality. Only on the 32nd round did they recognize, precisely, the quality of this team”, which finished in 10th place, with 40 points.

This season, Belenenses SAD is “more stronger and with more solutions”, in the president’s point of view, but which still needs to become a team, stressing that he does not feel “absolutely no need to sign players in January”.

“ We are not doing well, but we will grow with the difficult championship. Last year, on the eighth round, Rio Ave and Nacional had 10 points and we know how it ended. It’s better to start well than bad, but what matters is to end well”, he concluded.

After the stop for international commitments, Belenenses SAD visit the Berço, of the Portuguese Championship, to the third round of the Portuguese Cup, on October 17, at 15:00, and goes to Estádio do Bessa to face Boavista, on October 25, at 21:15, in a game counting for the ninth round of the I Football League.
