Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has revealed he is “far away” from agreeing a new deal with the club as his current contract nears its conclusion. The 32-year-old winger, who has been pivotal to Liverpool’s success, is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, enabling him to negotiate with overseas clubs from 1 January.
The Egyptian star contributed his 20th goal of the season during Liverpool’s dominant 5-0 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday, extending their lead at the Premier League summit to eight points. However, discussions regarding his future remain unresolved.
“No, we are far away from that [a new contract], and I don’t want to talk about it publicly,” Salah told Sky Sports following the match. “My focus is on helping Liverpool win the league and being a part of that success. I’ll give everything to the team to secure the title. There are other strong teams chasing us, so we need to stay concentrated and humble.”
Key players facing uncertain futures
Salah is not the only Liverpool star nearing the end of his contract, with both captain Virgil van Dijk and defender Trent Alexander-Arnold also set to become free agents next summer. Despite their ability to enter pre-contract talks with foreign clubs in January, manager Arne Slot remains unperturbed by the situation.
“I trust the professionalism of these players,” said Slot. “On the pitch and during training, I see the commitment they bring. I don’t control their private lives, but I know the focus they show on match days and in meetings. Virgil, Trent, and Mo are crucial to this team, and their contributions continue to impress me.”
Salah previously expressed frustration earlier in the season over the club’s reluctance to secure his long-term future, but he has maintained his commitment to Liverpool’s title ambitions.
Optimism among supporters
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy remains hopeful that Salah will stay at Anfield, viewing the stalled talks as part of the negotiation process. Speaking on Match of the Day, Murphy said, “I believe this is a tactical approach during contract discussions. Every fan wants Salah to stay, and I’m optimistic it’ll be resolved.
“These things take time, especially when significant sums of money are involved. He’s Liverpool’s most vital player right now, and the club knows they need to secure his future.”
Salah’s recent remarks, combined with his on-field performances, underline his importance to Liverpool as they aim to secure another Premier League title. However, his future beyond this season remains uncertain.
