Sunday could be Sean McVay’s final game as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams.
Per ESPN’s Adam SchefterMcVay’s immediate future with the team is in “limbo” after he waffled on returning this season after leading the Rams to a victory in Super Bowl 56.
“McVay has gone back and forth on the decision, and needs time to get away to process all that has transpired over the past year—winning a Super Bowl, being courted to work in television, getting married, watching his wife’s home country of Ukraine invaded, losing his grandfather, and then coaching a team that has fallen short of its expectations,” Schefter wrote.
There was speculation after the Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals that McVay would walk away from the Rams and go into broadcasting.
Per Andrew Marchand of the New York PostAmazon may have been willing to offer McVay a five-year deal worth $100 million to be the color commentator for Thursday Night Football if he decided to make the move to television after last season.
Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reported earlier this week that some of the NFL’s television partners have been eyeing McVay as a potential game or studio analyst for the 2023 season.

Midway through this season, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said on The Rich Eisen Show that there was “an acknowledgment” within the Rams organization that McVay’s future is “probably” tied to the core group of Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey.
Injuries have completely derailed the Rams during the 2022 season. Stafford and Kupp have only played nine games this season. Donald played 11 games before an ankle injury ended his season.
There were questions about Stafford’s future as he recovered from a spinal cord contusion. The 34-year-old confirmed on his wife Kelly’s podcast last month he’s not retiring.
The Rams have had four different quarterbacks start a game this season. Their 11 losses are the most by a reigning Super Bowl champion with one game left to play.
It could be difficult for Los Angeles to make a quick turnaround. The team doesn’t have a first-round draft pick this year due to the Stafford trade.
McVay is in his sixth season as Rams head coach. He has a 60-37 record with four playoff appearances and two trips to the Super Bowl.
