In the MuTh one tried one to liven up unfinished opera manuscript by the Viennese master based on an exotic subject.
Schubert’s eight completed operas have remained rarities despite all attempts at revitalization. Even more curious are his numerous opera fragments, such as “Shakuntala”, which he left half-finished in 1821 for unknown reasons. The subject, an Indian classic from the Sanskrit period, was translated in 1791 and made Goethe rave about it. Schubert’s setting in the Gerald Wirth’s version made it difficult to relate this enthusiasm in the MuTh concert hall in Vienna’s Augarten – although Schubert’s often only hinted orchestral accompaniment was skillfully orchestrated.
