Scotland’s World Cup playoff against Ukraine postponed

FIFA have agreed to postpone Scotland’s World Cup playoff semi-final against Ukraine due to the ongoing invasion by Russia.

The match was initially scheduled for Hampden Park on March 24, with the winner progressing to face the victor of the other semi-final, Austrian vs Wales, for a spot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, Ukraine wrote to both FIFA and UEFA to request a postponement of the fixture, and after a call on Monday featuring executives from all four countries involved in the playoffs, a decision was made to push the fixture back.

According to Sky Sports News, the plan is the play the game in June instead. As of yet, there is no news on whether Wales’ meeting with Austria, booked for the same date, will still go ahead.

The Welsh FA are expecting further clarity on the situation on Tuesday but are still planning for the game to proceed as normal.
