Netflix and UCP are reportedly co-developing a new anime adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series does not yet have a series order, and there are no details yet regarding a hopeful premiere date.
Creator Bryan Lee O’Malley will write and executive produce with BenDavid Grabinski, the showrunner behind the Nickelodeon revival of Are You Afraid of the Dark? If the show moves forward, the pair will showrun the series together.
Co-developing studio UCP is the division of Universal Studio Group behind The Umbrella Academy and Chucky. Anime house Science Saru has reportedly been selected to execute the animation work. That company’s Eunyoung Choi will serve as producer and Abel Gongora as director on the series. Science Saru produced two shorts for the recent Star Wars: Visions anime anthology released in September.
Scott Pilgrim has been enjoying an increasing number of revivals. In 2021, game publisher Ubisoft brought back the long-lost cult hit video game Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, with it even being made available on physical copies for many consoles. The film also marked its 10th anniversary with a re-release screened in cinemas back in April 2021. Earlier in the pandemic, the movie’s cast reunited for a virtual table read of the script.
