Sennheiser CX True Wireless headset review. Great sound and durability in a small package

Pros

  • stamina
  • musical expression
  • compact design

Cons

  • the case is easily scratched
  • poor microphone quality
  • limited application possibilities

Sennheiser has fully wireless headphones in several variants. One of the first great successes was the Momentum True Wireless model, which, however, did not impress many customers with a higher price.

Another attempt was the CX 400BT model, which is followed by the CX True Wireless model we tested, which will be followed by the CX Plus True variant from October. Wireless – it looks the same, but gets different guts, including active noise cancellation.

According to the manufacturer, the simpler CX True Wireless are intended for more demanding listeners. who are looking for premium sound, small size and also long life. All these features of the handset are basically.

Design and workmanship

You will receive the headphones in a box, where in addition to the pair of headphones itself, there is also a charging case, a power cord and three plugs in small paper bags. The charging case is quite small and thanks to the glossy plastic strip it looks elegant. The surface finish is matte, but not very resistant to abrasion, so expect visible traces of use after a week.

Do not open the case with one hand , the spring in the upper lid is relatively strong and the lid is locked in the fully open position, so there is no risk of accidental snapping when moving, which is often the disease of some cheaper models.

The headphones are stored vertically and tilt towards you to remove them comfortably. Behavior is also standard, and when the case is opened, the headset connects to the paired device if it is within range. The inner space of the case is plastic with a molded bed for both headphones – it holds in place both a magnet and a small protrusion between the power supply contacts.

Charging the case via the USB-C connector is already standard, and in this case fast charging is also available, where you have energy available for 60 minutes of listening time after 10 minutes on the charger. Endurance at full charge is 9 hours for headphones and another 18 hours will add a charged case.

the complaint is aimed at the surface treatment of the case. On the other hand, the plastic headphones look more durable and are also IPX4 certified, which guarantees resistance to splashing water.

Comfort and control

The headphones themselves have a simple shape with a curved neck and a silicone plug. You insert this part into the ear canal and then turn the whole body of the earpiece backwards until you find a stable position in your ear. From a visual point of view, it is necessary to take into account that the headphones protrude more from the ear.

however, the size of the supplied plugs must be chosen appropriately so that the handset holds and does not tend to slip and fall out. Personally, the supplied matte plugs did not suit my dimensions or the adhesion of the material to the skin, so I reached for others.

Sennheiser CX True Wireless

Price: 3 350 CZK

  • construction: intraaural headphones of closed design
  • Signal transmission: Bluetooth 5.2, SBC, AAC, aptX
  • frequency range: 5 – 21,000 Hz
  • endurance: headphones when fully charged approx. 9 h, with charging in the case up to 27 h
  • Function: volume control, player and phone calls
  • mass: 12 g headphones 37 g charging case
  • color: black, white
  • accessories: USB power cable, four pairs of plugs

Even with prolonged use, I did not notice any unpleasant pressure on the auricle or other pain associated with the headphones. However, the truth is that when I use the setting of the headphones at an irregular interval, I adjust, but it never fell out of my ear spontaneously.

The ambient noise is extremely good here, so an asymmetrical settlement in the ear canal means a worse musical experience with the penetration of parasitic sounds on one side. Therefore, it is good to pay attention to the selection and testing of silicone plugs at the beginning.

The control is solved by a touch pad on both headphones, which offers a basic set of commands distinguished by right / left handset and long / short touch. By default, one tap pauses / starts playback and a triple starts the voice assistant – independent of the handset.

A double tap on the left moves you a song back and a long touch will decrease the volume, for the right handset, double-tap will move you forward a song and a long touch will increase the volume. When making a call, then tap to answer / end the call and reject the incoming call twice.

Within the Smart Control service application, commands can be modified, but only to a limited extent, for example, changing the volume is only available with a long touch. As is customary with a similar design, even here you will sometimes avoid accidental contact when putting on or adjusting the position of the earpiece in your ear.

Connection stability is very good and does not occur even in a heavily disturbed environment to long outages or skipping, the sound transmission lags for a maximum of a second – ie much better behavior no for some competing models.

Musical expression

Right from the first listening, the headphones do not deny their origin and the Sennheiser-typical tuning with good representation in all frequency bands. The sound is really balanced here and if you have a mobile device that supports aptX or AAC codec, you will enjoy a really clean presentation.

Very a pleasant surprise is the ability to present a space where the music does not play right in the middle of your head. The manufacturer did not disappoint in this regard. The bass is clean and pleasantly warm and round, the middle band has a slight drop at the higher mids, the treble is clean and non-aggressive with a hint of suppression of very high frequencies.

Overall musical expression is possible further fine-tune using the equalizer and bass emphasis in the control application. I do not recommend the second step, because the bass is too strong and the overall balance of the speech is slightly lost. In the case of the equalizer, the changes in speech are very careful, unlike other brands.

sound recording when using handsfree, the sound quality is not very good in this respect and the other side of the phone will not be very happy with the presentation.

Verdict

Despite the slightly higher price tag, the Sennheiser CX True Wireless deserves attention because it really delivers what it promises. In terms of sound, this is a very successful model that will make even the most demanding users happy.

Thanks to the small size of the headphones and the case, they are suitable for everyday use. use, for example, when commuting to work or walking around the city. Durable design will leave you calm even in light rain.

The complaint is aimed at the control and its setting options. Behind the door, the CX Plus True Wireless model is not only to come with ANC, which you will appreciate when traveling, but according to the first foreign responses, they are also better at sound. Perhaps we will soon find out what the reality is.
