The actor Sidney Poitier
, the first black man to receive an Oscar for Best Actor, passed away this Friday (7th). ), aged 94 years. The information was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Bahamas, where the actor resided. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Poitier acted in classics such as
In the Heat of the Night (1967) and Chained (1958 ), but it was with the role of Homer Smith in A Voice in the Shadows
(1963) that the actor made history, becoming the first black actor to receive the Oscar statuette, in 1964.
He also starred in films that discussed important racial issues back in the 1960s, when extreme racism still dominated many regions of the US, such as Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967) .
Sidney Poitier’s last film work was the feature The Jackal (1997), with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere.
The actor served as an inspiration for the physical traits of John Stewart , the Green Lantern black, created in the early 1970s.
