Smriti Irani recalls earning Rs 1800 for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

By Grace Cyril: Smriti Irani is a household name now, thanks to her performance in the cult TV show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Many have known her for playing an ideal married woman Tulsi Virani. In a new interview now, the actress has revealed that she used to earn a mere Rs 1800 daily salary when she started out on the show. She also recalled her early days on the sets and how her producer didn’t let the crew eat on sets. Smriti also recalled travelling to the sets by an auto as she didn’t have a car of her own. This used to embarass her makeup man.

SMRITI IRANI RECALLS GETTING PAID RS 1800

During a recent conversation with Neelesh Misra on The Slow Interview in Hindi, Recalling her early days in the TV industry, Smriti Irani revealed that producer Shobha Kapoor did not allow anyone to eat or drink tea on the sets as she feared the furniture would be spoiled. “You don’t even look like a star, you look more like a technician with that kind of lifestyle. I used to get Rs 1800, per day. When Zubin and I got married we barely had ₹30,000. I remember my makeup man was embarrassed and he used to say, ‘gaadi toh lelo mujhe sharam aati hai mai gaadi pe aata hu aur Tulsi bhabhi auto mein aa rahi hai (please get a car. I feel embarrased that I come by car while Tulsi bhabhi travels in an auto)’ ,” Smriti said.

Smriti recalled how actors were allowed to have food on the set while the technicians and crew members were not. She added, “I had a setting with the spot guy, I used to ask for 60 teas to keep ready and I would go out with the technicians so that they all can have their tea too. I used to also travel the same way as the technicians so I knew what they went through.”

Smriti rose to fame after starring in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as the iconic Tulsi Virani, In Ramayana, she appeared as Goddess Lakshmi as well as Sita. Despite all her roles, her screen time in Ektaa Kapoor’s Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi will always be special for her fans.
