“The bird girl”, about a princess from the sky who falls to Earth, being first an oasis and then a cage from which she tries to escape, is the feature film project in stop motion that seeks to lift Sofía Carrillo.
It is an idea that, due to the nature of the technique required, takes about five years, but last year it received some support from Imcine and was in Europe in one of the most specialized markets in the matter.
Stop motion is a technique that requires creating characters and sets in various materials, manually moving their body and facial expressions, being these portrayed 24 times per second.
“We are well on the way to develop the project”, says Carrillo.
Member of the US Academy of Cinema, Arts and Sciences since 2018, Guadalajara is considered one of the Mexican bastions in stop motion, with which it has won national awards in
This year it is part of the Compendium of Contemporary Filmmakers organized by the Morelia International Film Festival, an initiative that reviews the work of 12 female directors through videos about their work and the virtual projection of some of their works in short or feature films.
Filmin Latino is the venue where you can see for free, among others, “Cerulia”, which gave him the Ariel in 2018; “Out of control” and “The walking matchstick witch”.
“This compendium gives us the way to make visible, show the work of several of us and normalize that several women we dedicate ourselves to directing and there are many more”, considers Carrillo.
Another of his shorts, “La casa triste”, is part of a platform called Glitch that handles animation for adults.
Regarding the treatment of women in the Mexican audiovisual media, Carrillo says that there is still a long way to go for something equitable with respect to men, but he looks for the positive of the last years.
“When I was sometimes studying to be a director of photography and it was a struggle because the cameras were heavy, they would see me arrive almost from the side with it and the tripod, but I also I played with that saying that if I could, I was strong and I was going to do it. Now it’s not like that anymore because the team is not so heavy”, he recalls.
“But if there were this that suddenly, even because of your physical constitution ica, others think that you are not capable. The number of female animation filmmakers has tripled, we’re doing well there, but there’s still a long way to go”, she comments.
