“Sound of Freedom” Sets Global Release

Angel Studios

After making an astonishing $127 million during its first three weeks in U.S. cinemas, distributor Angel Studios is planning to take its Summer season indie film breakout “Sound of Freedom” global.

The film will be released in South Africa on August 18th, Australia and New Zealand on August 24th, Mexico and over a dozen Latin American territories on August 31st, the UK and Ireland on September 1st and Spain from October 11th.

Alejandro Monteverde penned and directed the film, which follows a federal agent (Jim Caviezel) who, after rescuing a young boy from child traffickers, learns the boy’s sister is still captive and decides to embark on a dangerous mission to save her.

With time running out, he quits his job and journeys deep into the Colombian jungle, putting his life on the line to free her. Mira Sorvino, Bill Camp, Jose Zuniga and Eduardo Verastegui also star.

The project was developed at Fox International and was then purchased back by the filmmakers, who released it via Angel Studios. Of their global release plans, Angel Studios’ SVP Global Distribution Jared Geesey says in a statement:

“Since Sound of Freedom launched in the U.S., demand has been building around the world in dozens of regions and languages. Child trafficking is a global issue, and we hope to build on the incredible momentum here in the States and share the film’s powerful message worldwide.”

In the United States, the movie has been widely embraced by conservative and right-wing commentators. The film also employs an unusual ticket strategy which uses crowdfunding and an app dubbed Pay it Forward that allows tickets to be purchased for other people. Over 20% of the film’s opening day sales were due to the app.

Faith-based films have been consistent performers domestically over the years but rarely score wide international distribution or success – Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” being the obvious exception. Can the film’s domestic success be repeated overseas? Time will tell.
