South Africa: We may already be beyond the local peak in omicron morbidity

South African doctor Dr. Angelique Coetzee, national chair of the medical association in this country that was among the first in the world to start treating omicron patients – reported this morning to Reuters and CNN Because it seems that “the omicron curve decreases faster than that which characterized the delta strain – that is,” we may be over the peak “- when the clear expression of this: a decrease of 40% within 23 hours, in the daily verified number – From 13,992 diagnosed yesterday to only 8,515 yesterday.

The doctor’s announcement comes in the face of WHO data that the omicron has already been identified in 89 countries around the world. South Africa was the first to be identified. R. Kotzi reiterated: “We do not see any sign that this strain is exacerbating Cubid’s disease.”

However, the official report of the South African Minister of Health was that the situation regarding the number of hospitalizations was Corona morbidity shows that they are actually now rising sharply in more than half of South Africa’s nine provinces but there is no dramatic increase in mortality. In the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, the rate of infection decreased to 3.9% compared to the previous week. That is 377 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Minister stated: “The signs regarding the severity of the cases are positive. Preliminary data indicate that the rate of hospitalizations is increasing, but these do not necessarily indicate that the omicron disease is more severe. Of the approximately 20,000 diagnosed with omicron, only 20 cases ended in death, while at the peak of the delta the daily number of infections was over 26,000. It has probably already reached its peak in this country – and is now starting to decline in a relatively short period of time compared to the rate of decline from the peaks in previous epidemic waves including the Delta strain which was dominant in the fourth wave.
