A Spanish citizen has been on a hunger strike for more than 30 days in front of the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) in New York to demand freedom for Cuba and for the political prisoners of the protests of July 11 .
“My claim is humanitarian aid for Cuba and that they look out for the political prisoners,” said Nacho Rocha, who has lost 21 pounds since he stood in front of the organization.
Only drink water, energy drinks and other liquids, reported Radio Televisión Martí .
Activists who accompany him assure that he has complained of a headache and exhaustion.
He has also assured that he is tired and weakened in his hunger strike but that he will continue in front of the UN until the forces fail him.
Rocha has received solidarity from various organizations, artists, and social groups in New York.
On Tuesday Curtis Sliwa, current candidate for Mayor of the city and president of Guardian Angels of New York, a non-profit group that patrols the streets to prevent criminal acts.
The politician promised to repeat the visit to Rocha and said that he will do everything possible for the UN to address their claims.
He also stated that he will include their requests in his campaign to the mayor’s office and asked the Guardians to prevent the striker from being harassed by “rats or raccoons”, on their strike 24 hours a day.
Rocha traveled to Cuba 14 years ago on a visit where he criticized the Fidel Castro regime.
Last night he was visited by model Rachel Vallori, who expressed her solidarity.
This Spaniard decided to join this action because he lived in Cuba for many years, -more than he has spent in the United States and in his own country- and he knew first-hand the situation that the people are going through on the Island.
“I have lived in Cuba, but not in Varadero, I have lived in the towns with the people of Cuba,” he said.
