Spooky cough. Omicron affects children in a new way, pediatricians warn

Omicron seems to be affecting children under the age of five in a new way – a spooky cough resembling the barking of a seal, writes the American portal NBC News .

So-called laryngotracheobronchitis is inflammation of the larynx, trachea and bronchi, which is caused by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.

Although the disease is not generally harmful, it can frighten parents who are already afraid that their babies and toddlers, who are too small for a covid vaccine, will be infected with the virus.

Causes severe swelling

Doctors say this is most likely to happen because omicron tends to settle higher in the respiratory tract and not deeper in the lungs.

“The airways of young children are so narrow that their obstruction requires much less inflammation, “ said Buddy Creech, a childhood infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

When a child with The small, inflamed airways breathe, make a distinct sound, and may result in a cough that sounds like a dog or seal barking.
