The San Antonio Spurs aren’t a particularly exciting team to watch right now, but that’s not stopping fans from turning out in droves to watch their upcoming game against the Golden State Warriors at the Alamodome.
On Wednesday, the Spurs announced an NBA-record 63,592 tickets have been sold for Friday’s matchup against the reigning champions in the building they called home for nine seasons from 1993 to 2002.

Per Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-Newsthe previous record for tickets sold was 62,046 at the Georgia Dome for a showdown between the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks on March 27, 1998.
As part of the franchise’s 50th anniversary celebration, the Spurs announced in August they were going to play one home game at the Alamodome.
Friday’s game marks one of three times this season that the Spurs will play a home game away from AT&T Center. They hosted the Miami Heat at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City, Mexico, on Dec. 17.
San Antonio’s final home game of the season on April 8 will be played against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Moody Center, home of the Texas Longhorns men’s and women’s basketball teams.
The team announced on Jan. 4 that musical artist Ally Brooke will perform the national anthem prior to Friday’s tip-off, while 90’s rap duo Tag Team will perform at halftime.
Tag Team’s iconic “Whoomp! (There It Is)” song was released in 1993, the first year the Spurs played in the arena.
While a crowd of this size is unusual for an NBA game, at least one of the players on the Warriors is familiar with it. Stephen Curry played in front of more than 57,000 fans for Davidson’s Elite Eight game against Kansas in the 2008 NCAA tournament.
The reigning NBA Finals MVP made his return to the Warriors’ lineup on Tuesday in a 125-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns. He scored 24 points in 31 minutes in his first game since Dec. 14 because of a shoulder injury.
The Spurs currently have the second-worst record in the Western Conference at 13-28. Their attendance at AT&T Center reflects those struggles, as they have the third-lowest average home turnout in the NBA with 15,614 fans per game.
