During the rains that covered Slovenia, the weather in some places is shaped by even stronger winds and snow. The snow line occasionally dropped to 1,500 meters above sea level at night, with strong winds blowing, especially in higher-lying areas. Strong winds knocked down individual trees in several Slovenian municipalities, which endangered buildings and obstructed road traffic. Winter equipment is mandatory on the road across Vršič.
As the Information Center of the Republic of Slovenia wrote in the report, strong winds caused headaches in the municipalities of Laško, Slovenske Konjice, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Zreče, Koper, Piran, Kranj, Preddvor, Domžale, Kamnik, Kočevje, Šmartno pri Litiji, Poljčane, Rače-Fram, Ajdovščina, Kobarid, Tolmin, Črnomelj , Metlika, Cerknica, Hrpelje-Kozina, Ilirska Bistrica, Pivka, Sežana, Gorišnica, Radlje ob Dravi, Slovenj Gradec and Zagorje ob Savi.
The wind also revealed the roofs of some buildings and damaged electrical and telecommunications poles. According to the data collected so far, 20 voluntary fire brigades and three professional fire brigades have been activated, they said.

On the main road Kobarid-Staro selo-Robič, traffic is on several sections obstructed by downed trees. Also on the regional road Žaga-Kobarid, where traffic is also obstructed by stones on the roadway. The wind also obstructs traffic in the Primorska region between Srmin and Kastelec. The Strmec-Mangart road is closed due to winter conditions. Due to the snow on the carriageway, winter equipment is mandatory on the road across the Vršič pass.
According to the Environmental Agency of the Republic of Slovenia (Arso), gusts of wind in the mountains reached 100 kilometers per hour in Bovec up to 80 kilometers per hour. At night and on Friday morning, gusts of the bora in the Primorska region will still be able to reach speeds between 100 and 120 km / h in exposed locations.
What awaits us?
Cloudy and windy weather will continue tomorrow. It will occasionally rain lightly in the morning, but in the afternoon the rain from the northwest will gradually stop and towards evening it will start to clear. Saturday will be sunny but fresh in most parts of Slovenia. A stronger northeast wind will still blow, and a moderate bora in the Primorska region. On Sunday, the clouds will be slightly higher again, but it will remain mostly dry.
For the start of next week, current forecasts point to mostly sunny weather with morning temperatures around zero and daily temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius. It will be more cloudy again in the middle of the week, when a new supply of cold air will descend over our places. At that time, the snow line will be able to fall below 1000 meters above sea level with light local precipitation.
Unusually warm start to the month
After an unusually warm start in October, when the freezing point was well above our highest peaks, the mountains are now completely wintery. The snow line dropped to about 1,500 meters above sea level in the Julian Alps at night, and a few snowflakes brought about a hundred meters lower during the rain. On Kredarica, 40 centimeters of snow fell, and on Vogel 15 centimeters of snow, which is carried by strong winds.
Such a pronounced cooling in the first half of October is, of course, not unusual. On the contrary, in the past we have often experienced a much larger drop in temperatures during this time.
Let us remember the events of this day ten years ago, when after a warm summer start with temperatures close to 30 degrees Celsius, some lowlands were also whitened by snow. In the Notranjska and Kočevje regions, as much as 20 centimeters of snow fell locally, which caused snowfall along the still deciduous trees. Last year, the first snowflakes were mixed with raindrops in the higher alpine valleys at the end of September. The snow line then dropped to an altitude of about 800 meters.
