Subaru is still new to EV, but that doesn’t stop it from discovering more ambitious projects. The carmaker has unveiled two concept EVs at the Tokyo Motor Show, including its first all-electric race car.
Subaru joins giant EVs
The STI E-RA Concept hints at Subaru’s brilliant 1,073-horsepower vehicle, high thrust and all-wheel drive paired with a unique torque vectoring system that maximizes traction and stability. While the 60 kWh battery is relatively small, Subaru is confident that the E-RA can thrive on the track. It’s not a fast vehicle like VW’s ID.R, but it’s ahead of road cars like the Tesla-in Model S Plaid in terms of comfort. The company plans to test the E-RA on Japanese racetracks later this year.
The brand also unveiled the Solterra STI Concept which a sportier version of the upcoming crossover. The company is serious about electric vehicles and believes it can produce high-performance cars. The challenge is to translate lessons learned from such concepts into ordinary vehicles. Subaru is lagging behind EV compared to even current companies such as VW, Mercedes and GM, and may need to make rapid progress if it wants to compete with its competitors.
