The Portuguese Frederico Morais and Afonso Antunes were eliminated today in the first round of the second stage of the Challenger Series of the World Surf League (WSL), in Ericeira.
At Praia de Ribeira d’ Ilhas, Frederico Morais and Afonso Antunes both competed in the 24th and final heat of the first round and failed to qualify for the second round, for which Vasco Ribeiro had already qualified, on Saturday.
The 10th ranked of the 2021 world circuit did not go beyond the third place in the heat, with 8.93 points (4.33 and 4.6), finishing the Ericeira race among the 49th ranked, while the ‘ wild card’ Afonso Antunes was fourth, with 8.3 (3.83 and 4.47), placing himself among the 73rd placed, as did Tomás Fernandes, away from the race on Saturday.
The two Portuguese were defeated today by Brazilian Alejo Muniz and Australian Sheldon Simkus, who scored 11.77 and 10.53 points, respectively.
Francisca Veselko was the first representative and Portuguese in the women’s competition, finishing the seventh heat of the first round in third place, with 11 points (3 and 8), ahead of the Hawaiian Coco Ho (9.67).
A The national champion was beaten by the Japanese Shino Matsuda (13.83) and the Basque Garazi Sanchez-Ortun (12.83), ending the race in the 33rd place.
Teresa Bonvalot, Yolanda Sequeira , Carolina Mendes and ‘wild card’ Mafalda Lopes will still compete in the first round of Meo Vissla Pro Ericeira, whose waiting period lasts until Sunday.
